On March 3, 2025, Ontario transitioned the administration of the International Registration Plan (IRP) services from the Ministry of Transportation to ServiceOntario. As many of us in the industry have seen this transition has not been smooth and has resulted in significant delays in the processing of all application types and the issuance of fee notices. Due to these delays, Ontario has had no choice but to take steps to ensure all IRP carriers have adequate time to receive their renewal credentials.
Originally, on March 17, 2025, Ontario issued a 30-day registration extension to all IRP registered carriers with plates expiring on March 31, 2025. This extension allowed vehicles to remain valid through April 30, 2025.
Ontario IRP has announced an additional registration extension.
As announced on the IRP website, all IRP registered carriers with plates expiring between March 31, 2025, and May 31, 2025, are now valid through June 30, 2025. This additional time provides carriers with the necessary flexibility to complete their renewals while Ontario continues the transition of IRP services.
To avoid any confusion during travel or roadside inspections, it is recommended that IRP carriers keep a copy of the official extension letter with them. Click here to view the letter. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation Enforcement Office, IRP Inc., and all other IRP jurisdictions have been notified of this extension to help ensure consistent enforcement practices across regions.
While registration extensions help those carriers with expiring IRP plates, the memo did not address the backlog of time sensitive new vehicle applications.
