5 Questions To Ask When Switching ELD Providers

Looking To Switch ELD Providers?

We are now closing in on the 1 year anniversary of the FMCSA ELD Manadate that went into effect December 18th, 2017 and many carriers are evaluating their current provider. In consideration is how the first year has gone, whether the current providers promises of a feature rich and compliant ELD were met and whether to commit to the long-term or explore another option.

One20 and ZED-ELD have already ceased operations

Over the last 11 months many ELD providers have stopped selling ELDs or ceased operations all together, two examples being One20 and ZED-ELD. One20's approach was to try to appeal to the drivers that opposed the mandate and marketed themselves as a driver service (with value adds through Free Truckstop services, maps, etc.). ZED-ELD on the otherhand, although backed by Cummins, had a business model that was unsustainable - without the recurring monthly cost. With this type of model you cannot budget, support and scale this type of business. Though these are just a few examples, we believe it is just the start of several companies that were built on unsustainable business models and will need to end their business in the next year or so. When vetting a new ELD provider it is important to look at all aspects of their company such as how long have they been in business, what type of payment model do they use and whether they offer more than one product. As quite often rings true, you get what you pay for. If you select the lowest cost ELD provider you should not be surprised when there are service issues and a lack of training or customer support.
